Milk has never been so cheap. Modern agracultural technology and highly productive “turbo-cows” enable German farmers to produce much more milk then is consumed domestically.
The traditional solution is to process surpluses into powdered milk. But as early as the 1970s and 80s, “milk lakes” and “butter mountains” became media buzzwords.
So where does the surplus go today? Abroad – for German farm politicians know only one magic word: “export”.
