Alfred Hitchcock was here. Billy Wilder, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Wolfgang Petersen, and Bully Herbig – they all shot movies, at some point, on the Bavaria Film lot. Since 1919, the studio in Geiselgasteig has been the birthplace of such theatrical films as Cabaret, Das Boot, or The NeverEnding Story, as well as such TV productions as the cult series Raumpatrouille Orion, the Schimanski Tatort episodes, or the daily soap Sturm der Liebe.
In her extensively researched documentary, director Katarina Schickling looks behind the scenes of Bavarian Movie Town and illustrates the eventful history of Bavaria Film – with lots of film clips, archive finds, and making-of movie production scenes. Such German cinema legends as Mario Adorf, Lilo Pulver, Marianne Koch, and Senta Berger; the longtime head of Bavaria Film, Günter Rohrbach; and such film directors as Joseph Vilsmaier, Dominik Graf, and Caroline Link share with us their very personal memories of “Bavarian Hollywood”.
