When the Wall between the two German states fell on the night of 9 November 1989, people believed in a new era: in freedom and in peace across all borders. It was musicians, rock stars from East and West, who fuelled the fighting spirit of the hour – a soundtrack of great hopes before the fall of the Wall, with anthems like "Freedom" and "Wind of Change". Thirty years later, however, walls are still standing and in Germany "West" and "East" are probably still far from being just points of the compass. In the USA, President Trump is promising his "wall" against South American immigration, in Ukraine Putin has long since built his fence and in Europe it's all about Brexit, external borders and fences, for example in Hungary. "Security" instead of freedom? Just like 30 years ago, it is musicians today who express the zeitgeist. They talk turkey like Campino at the "Wir sind mehr" concert in Chemnitz 2018, bring out old wall songs like New Model Army in their European summer concerts and fight hate like Lenny Kravitz with his new songs. Ambassadors between times and worlds.
What were their hopes and their soundtracks of the Wende? What became of them? This film tells great stories – of lost hopes, but also of new visions, and of what music achieves where words come to nothing. A music film with strong characters and perspectives, modern visual language and a great soundtrack.
